(Olive Tree) – Sara Niemietz

I started studying Mandarin in high school and have long been a fan of its beauty and intricacies. This song has always had a special place in my mind – from the lovely melody to the lyrics – can’t get enough!

I wanted to share it with you!

A huge shout out to Mrs. Fisher and Jennifer MacKenzie..

Here is a basic English adaptation of the lyrics:
Do not ask where I come from
My hometown lies far away
Why do I wander on?
In distant lands, I wander on.

For the birds that wheel in the sky
For the brooks that flow in the valleys
And for the vast green meadows,
In distant lands, I wander on.

And then, and then
For my dream-spun olive tree
Olive tree

Do not ask where I come from
My old hometown lies far away
Why do I wander on?
Why do I wander on, far away?

For my dream-spun olive tree.

Do not ask where I come from
My old hometown lies far away
Why do I wander on?
In distant lands, I wander on.

    Lyrics translation:
    Title: Olive Tree

Don't ask me where I am from
    My hometown is faraway
    Why am I wondering?
    Wondering far away, wandering.

For the birds circling in the sky
For the creek streaming in the valley
For the vast and green prairie
    Wandering far away, wandering

    And more, and more

For the olive tree in my dreams, olive tree

Don't ask me where I am from
My hometown is far far away …
