  3. Why would olive oil work topically but not when ingested? We have an olive farm in Italy between Rome and Naples on the coast and use the oil in cooking. It is organic but will definitely use on my very sore knees. Thank you. Happy thanks giving. I am very thankful for Dr. Greger.

  4. The topic oil application shocked me as it is one of the main ayurvedic procedures for prevention and treatment of diseases. One of the most common variation is called abhyangha, which is a massage using oils. But for ayurveda, better than olive oil is sesame seed oil.

  5. Maybe topical olive oil "works", simply because it stays soluble longer than the study alternatives, therefore facilitating more localized rubbing/massage, therefore giving more relief. Just a thought.

  6. It's interesting that 105 year old longevity expert Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara said he has a glass of milk with one tablespoon of olive oil everyday for smooth skin and smooth arteries. Do you think he did it for the Sphingolipids and the Oleocanthal?

  7. Olive oil lays like an oil slick on the skin though. Coconut oil is so much more pleasant because it absorbs into the skin and doesn't leave a greasy mess behind. Everyone in pain should get right on this though. Start rubbing that EVOO into your skin immediately and report back right here.

  8. this does remind me of something: the oldest woman to have ever lived, Jeanne Calment, claimed she put olive oil on her skin every day. maybe that was a part of why she lived so long.

I know how quickly olive oil goes rancid and I keep a small bottle knowing that until now it added to the taste of bruschetta but added nothing to the nutritional value of food except ok a teaspoon in carrot soup … yes I have osteoarthitis in my knees; 65, early riser, as is my dog and we get in about 45 min to an hour when we wake up as long as the roads aren't treacherous … live in Canada. Great experiment! Will apply on knees and see what happens. Currently I I use an icepack after our a,m. walk this sounds interesting. (We add additional shorter jaunts am lucky work from home in a pleasant building abutting a park_). Tx to Dr Pangloss in Voltaire's Candide … but more reason against all the evidence of humans' lack of responsible stewardship over the planet we think we own, you can't be clinically depressed and accomplish much so if the glass is half full it's a great start.

  10. While in my 40s I had crippling arthritis in my neck and right shoulder. The Dr who diagnosed me said there was no cure! I went to a natural practitioner who told me to eliminate ALL processed foods and animal products from my diet and to consume lots of fresh vegetables, especially celery as the sodium phosphate in it would clean the bone spurs out of my joints. Fresh fruit but nothing from the citrus family until the arthritis was gone. Grains, legumes, lentils, raw seeds, especially sesame for their high calcium and raw nuts. In 3 months I could lift my hand above my head where as before I could not bring it up to my waist.
    I will be 80 on my next birthday. I go to the gym 3 days a week, speed walk 3.5miles on alternate days and walk to church on Sunday. This Spring I placed second in my age group in a 5K race.
    How long will I follow this lifestyle? For as long as I don't want to suffer with degenerative diseases. Peace💚

  11. Hello dear Dr. Greger, I read also your book "How not to Die" with great attention. Very good information. However, what you write rather dismissively about olive oil baffles me very much. You are a real expert who has spent many years intensively studying nutrition. Here in Germany, for example, we have an expert, Dr. Ulrich Strunz (book: Fit mit Fett), who is also a medical doctor who deals intensively with nutrition and especially with the subject of fats. He is also a recognized expert. Mr. Strunz bases his statements on numerous studies. For example, unrefined olive oil still contains over 50 protective plant substances, including vitamin E and phenols. Olive oil of high quality is natural and the olives can be almost cold pressed. The monounsaturated fats are more stable and do not oxidize as easily in our bloodstreams compared to polyunsaturated fats. Olive oil has been shown to lower LDL. Mr. Strunz praises olive oil very much and lists many other arguments. I wonder, as a layman (I also have nothing to do with the olive oil industry or marketing), how two such well-read experts can have such different opinions about olive oil. Overall, I am very happy about your book, because it helps a lot of people. Thank you for it. With kind regards

  12. Maybe the Grapeseed and Olive Oil concoction was somewhat effective, since the Low-Bioavailable Oil-Soluble Resveratrol in the Grapeseeds went into Solution. Also, maybe an olfactory factor? Just a thought.
